A TRN check answers one narrow question: is the business in front of you actually registered for VAT with the Federal Tax Authority? It matters most at the moment you are about to pay a VAT line on an invoice, because only a registered business is entitled to charge it.
Where the check lives online
Most guides point you to a dedicated verification page. There is no such page. We tried the address that looks obvious, tax.gov.ae/en/services/trn.verification.aspx, on 11 August 2026, and it redirects to the FTA page not found screen. The tool is a widget, and the widget sits on every page of the site.
| Question | Answer, as the portal shows it |
|---|---|
| Where to start | Any page of tax.gov.ae, side rail button labelled TRN |
| What opens | A dialog headed TRN verification |
| What you type | The tax registration number, 15 characters |
| Extra step | A code read from an image, 5 characters |
| How you submit | The Submit button inside the dialog |
| Where the answer appears | A dialog headed TRN verification result |
| Cost and account | Free, no login |

What you need before you start
- The tax registration number exactly as printed, 15 characters, no spaces.
- The legal name of the supplier as it appears on the invoice, so you can compare it against what comes back.
- A browser that displays the code image, because the code cannot be skipped.
The number is normally printed on the tax invoice. A supplier who charges VAT and will not give you the number has already told you something useful.
Step by step, in the words the portal uses
- Open any page on tax.gov.ae.
- In the side rail, press the button labelled TRN. Its accessible name is TRN verification.
- A dialog headed TRN verification opens. The first field carries the placeholder TRN and accepts 15 characters.
- Enter the number. If the length is wrong, the portal answers: Please enter value of 15 characters long.
- Below the field sits an image with a code, under the label Enter the code as shown in the Image. That box accepts 5 characters.
- Press Submit.
- The answer opens in a dialog headed TRN verification result. If the code was mistyped, the portal answers: Page not valid. The code you entered is not valid.
- After the result, the site offers a Happiness Rating dialog. That is feedback on the service, not part of the check.
Why the code matters
it has to be typed by a person, so this check cannot run quietly in the background of another website. If a tool promises a UAE TRN lookup without sending you to tax.gov.ae, ask where its data comes from and how old it is.
Where to find a number you do not have
The public tool confirms a number, it does not hand you one. The widget has a single field and it accepts 15 characters, so a company name is not a way in: searching the FTA by trading name is not something this check offers.
If the number you need is your own, it belongs to the registered business and lives inside its Federal Tax Authority account. The FTA states on its EmaraTax page that its services are only available through UAEPass, so there is no anonymous route to your own registration record. On a supplier invoice the number should already be printed; if it is missing, ask for it in writing rather than reconstructing it from a company name.
What a TRN check does not prove
This is the part most guides leave out, and it is the part that protects you. A confirmed number tells you that a tax registration exists. It does not tell you:
- that the trade licence is valid, or that the company is licensed for the activity it is selling to you;
- that the bank account on the invoice belongs to that company;
- that the VAT amount on the invoice was calculated correctly;
- that the registration is still current at the moment you pay, because a registration can be cancelled;
- that the person emailing you works for the company whose number they sent;
- that the invoice itself is genuine, because a real number can be copied onto a fake document.
A number that verifies is not evidence that the document carrying it is real. Match the name that comes back against the name on the invoice, and match both against the bank beneficiary before you pay.
The licence question is a separate check with a separate answer. For that one, use how to verify a UAE business licence, and treat the two results as answers to two different questions.
What to do when the number does not check out
- The tool does not confirm the number. Ask the supplier for the tax registration certificate and re-enter the number from that document. Hold the VAT line of the payment until it confirms.
- A different name comes back. That can be innocent, for example a group entity that holds the registration, but ask for it in writing before you pay.
- The supplier is not registered and is charging VAT anyway. That is the case to stop on. Do not pay the VAT element, and ask for a corrected invoice.
- The number that will not confirm is your own. That is a registration problem rather than a checking problem, and it needs fixing before your next invoice goes out.
If the last one is your situation, our VAT and tax registration consultants handle registration, corrections and de-registration with the FTA.
Red flags on a UAE invoice
- VAT is charged but no tax registration number is printed anywhere.
- The number is printed but has the wrong length, so the portal will not even accept it.
- The name on the invoice, the name in the check result and the bank beneficiary are three different names.
- The invoice arrives from a free email domain while the company claims a corporate website.
- Payment is requested to a personal account.
- The supplier resists giving the registration certificate.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the UAE TRN check on the FTA website?
There is no separate page for it. The check opens from the button labelled TRN in the side rail of tax.gov.ae, and that button is present on every page of the site.
How many characters is a UAE TRN?
15. The FTA field accepts 15 characters, and a wrong length is refused with the message: Please enter value of 15 characters long.
Does a TRN check cost anything?
No. The check is free and needs no account or login. You do have to type a 5 character code shown as an image.
Can I check a TRN in bulk or through an API?
The FTA tool requires a code read from an image on each attempt, so each lookup has to be done by a person on tax.gov.ae.
Does a valid TRN mean the invoice is genuine?
No. A real registration number can be copied onto a fake invoice. Match the name returned by the check against the name on the invoice and against the bank beneficiary before paying.
What if a supplier charges VAT but has no TRN?
Only a business registered with the FTA may charge VAT. Ask for a corrected invoice and hold the VAT element of the payment until a registration is confirmed.
