If your Emirates ID has expired, the first question is usually simple: how big is the fine, and how do I check it? This guide gives you the concrete answer, a calculator to estimate your own fine, and the official way to check and pay it.
If you also need to renew, read Emirates ID Renewal in the UAE, and for the standard card costs see Emirates ID Fees in the UAE.
Quick answer
There is a 30-day grace period after your Emirates ID expires, during which there is no fine. After that, the late-renewal fine is AED 20 per day, capped at a maximum of AED 1,000 (reached at 50 days past the grace period). The fine is set under Ministerial Decision No. 25 of 2011, it is mandatory, and it is calculated automatically when you renew through ICP. It is separate from, and added on top of, the normal renewal fee.
Estimate your Emirates ID fine
Use the calculator below to estimate the late-renewal fine from your card’s expiry date. It is an estimate only – the exact amount is confirmed by ICP when you renew.
Emirates ID fine by number of days late
| Time since expiry | Grace status | Estimated fine |
| Up to 30 days | Within grace period | AED 0 |
| 40 days | 10 days overdue | AED 200 |
| 50 days | 20 days overdue | AED 400 |
| 60 days | 30 days overdue | AED 600 |
| 80 days or more | 50+ days overdue | AED 1,000 (capped) |
How to check your Emirates ID fine
There is no separate public “fine checker” that shows your penalty from an ID number alone. In practice, the fine is calculated and shown to you during the official renewal process. To check it:
- Open ICP Smart Services or the UAEICP app and start an Emirates ID renewal. Any late fine is displayed before payment.
- Use the ICP ID Card Status page to confirm your card’s current status and expiry.
- If the amount is unclear, contact the ICP call centre on 600 522222 (inside the UAE) or +971 600 522222 from abroad.
To confirm where your renewal application stands, see How to Check Emirates ID Status Online in the UAE. To understand who ICP is, read What Is ICP in the UAE.
How the fine is calculated
The rule is straightforward once you know the three numbers:
- Grace period: 30 days from the expiry date, with no penalty.
- Daily rate: AED 20 for each day beyond the grace period.
- Cap: AED 1,000 maximum, so the fine stops growing once you are 50 days past the grace period.
So a card that expired 45 days ago is 15 days past the grace period, giving 15 × AED 20 = AED 300.
How to pay the Emirates ID fine
The fine is paid as part of the renewal, not as a standalone transaction. When you complete the renewal through ICP Smart Services, the UAEICP app, or an approved typing centre, the late fee is added to the renewal fee and settled in one payment. ICP will not issue the new card until the fine is paid.
How to avoid the fine
The only reliable way to avoid the penalty is to renew inside the 30-day grace period – ideally before the card even expires. ICP usually sends a reminder, but you should not rely on it. If your SMS alerts are not arriving, check that your mobile number linked to your Emirates ID is correct.
Emirates ID renewal grace period
Your Emirates ID must be renewed when it expires, and there is a limited grace period – commonly around 30 days – before late fees begin to accumulate. After that, a daily fine builds up for each day the card remains un-renewed, up to a maximum. The single best way to avoid the fine is to renew promptly: watch for the expiry date, and note that when your residency visa is renewed the Emirates ID renewal is usually part of the same process. If your card has already expired, renewing quickly stops the fine from growing further, since it accrues per day until you act.
Need help with an Emirates ID or residency issue?
If your expired Emirates ID is tied to a wider residency, visa, or status problem, the fine may only be one part of it. Emirae can help you understand the next step through Visa and Residency.
