The visa people call the Dubai digital nomad visa is officially the virtual work residence permit. It exists for one specific person: someone employed by, or running, an organisation outside the UAE who wants to live here while continuing that work. It is the only UAE residence route that needs no sponsor and no host inside the country. All figures below come from the Dubai residency authority and the federal identity authority, checked on 8 August 2026.
The two conditions that decide the case
The authority states them as two lines and everything else is paperwork around them. First, the applicant proves the work is being done remotely and with an organisation outside the country. Second, the applicant proves income of at least USD 3,500 per month or the equivalent in another currency.
Note what is absent. There is no requirement to be an employee rather than an owner, no UAE company, no local sponsor, and no requirement to be inside the country when the visa is issued: the federal authority states explicitly that the beneficiary need not be in the UAE for issuance.
Documents
| Item | Status |
|---|---|
| Coloured personal photograph | Compulsory |
| Passport copy, valid at least six months | Compulsory |
| Health insurance copy | Compulsory |
| Medical fitness test result | Compulsory |
| Proof of remote work for an organisation outside the UAE | Compulsory |
| Salary certificate showing USD 3,500 or equivalent | Compulsory |
| Emirates ID application receipt | Compulsory |
The authority adds that mandatory and optional documents can differ according to the data entered in the application, so treat the list as the floor rather than the ceiling.
What it costs
| Charge | Amount | Charged by |
|---|---|---|
| Application fee | AED 100 | Federal identity authority |
| Issuance fee | AED 100 | Federal identity authority |
| Smart services fee | AED 100 | Federal identity authority |
| Residence permit fee | AED 200 | Dubai residency |
| Knowledge Dirham | AED 10 | Dubai residency |
| Innovation Dirham | AED 10 | Dubai residency |
| Fee inside the country | AED 500 | Dubai residency |
| Delivery | AED 20 | Dubai residency |
| Overstay, per day | AED 50 | Federal identity authority |
On top of the published charges sit two real costs the authority does not set: your health insurance premium, which must be valid in the UAE, and the medical fitness test. The grace period to remain in the country after the permit expires or is cancelled is 60 days.
Virtual work permit or a UAE company?
The two routes answer different questions, and the wrong one is expensive.
| Virtual work permit | UAE company and investor visa | |
|---|---|---|
| Who your income comes from | An organisation outside the UAE | Anyone, including UAE clients |
| Can you invoice UAE clients | No, the permit is built on foreign employment | Yes, that is the point of the licence |
| Sponsor | None required | Your own company |
| Validity | One year, renewable | Typically two years, renewable |
| Setup cost | Government fees plus insurance | Licence plus the immigration stack |
If any part of your income will be billed to a UAE customer, the permit is the wrong instrument and a licence is the right one. Our freelance permit against company formation comparison sets out that decision, and freelance visa cost in the UAE has the numbers for the licensed route.
Frequently asked questions
What income do I need for the Dubai digital nomad visa?
At least USD 3,500 per month or the equivalent in another currency, evidenced by a salary certificate. The authority states this as a condition of the virtual work residence permit rather than a guideline.
How much does the Dubai remote work visa cost?
The federal identity authority charges AED 100 application, AED 100 issuance and AED 100 smart services. Dubai residency charges AED 200 for the permit plus AED 10 Knowledge Dirham, AED 10 Innovation Dirham, AED 500 in-country fee and AED 20 delivery. Health insurance and the medical test are extra and are not set by the authority.
Do I need a sponsor or a UAE company?
No. The virtual work residence permit is issued without a guarantor or host inside the country, which is what distinguishes it from every other UAE residence route.
How long is it valid?
One year, subject to renewal. After expiry or cancellation there is a 60 day grace period to stay in the country.
Can I work for UAE clients on this visa?
No. The permit rests on proof that the work is performed remotely for an organisation outside the UAE. Billing UAE customers needs a trade licence, whether a freelance permit or a company.
Do I have to be in the UAE to apply?
No. The federal authority states that the presence of the beneficiary inside the country is not required for visa issuance. The passport must be valid for at least six months.
How long does approval take?
Dubai residency quotes 48 hours and the federal authority quotes two days. Both assume a complete file; missing documents restart the clock.
