Sponsoring Your Parents for a UAE Residence Visa

Quick answer

Minimum salary AED 10,000, evidenced by a government salary certificate or a private sector employment contract. An attested tenancy contract big enough for the household, and three months of bank statements. The permit is one year, renewable. Every application goes to a committee, and on approval a financial guarantee of AED 5,000 per request is required, capped at AED 15,000 in total. Expect 14 days, not the 48 hours a spouse or child file takes. Both parents are sponsored together unless one has died or the parents are divorced.

Sponsoring a spouse or a child is routine. Sponsoring a parent is a different procedure with a different salary bar, a different desk and a committee that can say no. In Dubai it is not handled as an ordinary family visa at all: it runs through the residency authority’s humanitarian cases route, which is why the requirements published for family sponsorship do not match what a parent’s file actually needs. Everything below comes from the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai, checked on 8 August 2026.

What the file has to contain

Document Detail
Passport copy of the parent The sponsored person, not the sponsor
Salary certificate or employment contract Salary certificate for the government sector, employment contract for the private sector, minimum AED 10,000
If you are a partner or investor rather than an employee Partnership agreement, trade licence and the partners’ annex instead of a salary document
Attested tenancy contract Accommodation suitable for the number of family members
Bank statements The last three months
Affidavit from your consulate Required specifically for parents
Medical fitness test Everyone aged 18 and over, at an approved centre in the UAE

Parents-in-law follow the same list and the same AED 10,000 bar. The relationship rules the authority publishes allow a resident to sponsor a father, a mother and minor siblings where dependency is proven, and the spouse’s father, mother and minor children where custody is proven.

Why you cannot sponsor only your mother

The rule published by the Dubai authority is that a parent’s sponsorship should cover both parents, with two exceptions: death, or divorce. Applications to bring one parent while leaving a living, married spouse behind are the single most common reason a file stalls, and it is a policy position rather than a paperwork gap, so no amount of extra documents fixes it. If your case fits an exception, put the death certificate or divorce decree in the file from the start, attested.

The guarantee, and what it is not

Approval carries a financial guarantee of AED 5,000 for each request, with the total guarantee not exceeding AED 15,000. This is a security deposit held against the sponsorship, not a fee and not a payment for the visa. Budget it as locked cash rather than as spend.

Published fees

Charge Amount
Residence permit fee AED 200
Knowledge Dirham AED 10
Innovation Dirham AED 10
Fee inside the country AED 500
Delivery AED 20
Visa fee, parent already inside the UAE AED 1,035
Visa fee, parent still abroad AED 365
Overstay fine after entry AED 25 per day

The issuance fee rises by AED 100 for each year where the residency runs beyond two years, which rarely applies to a parent because the permit is issued annually. After expiry or cancellation there is a 60 day grace period to stay in the country.

One year at a time

A parent’s permit is granted for a year and renewed a year at a time, whatever the length of your own visa. Two practical consequences: your parents’ medical insurance has to be live at every renewal, and a salary that drops below AED 10,000 during the year becomes a problem at renewal rather than immediately. Plan the renewal window before the permit is in its last month.

If you are also bringing a spouse or children, those files run on the ordinary family route with a much lower salary bar and a 48 hour turnaround. Our UAE family visa sponsorship guide covers that side, and the minimum salary for family sponsorship page sets out the thresholds.

Frequently asked questions

What salary do I need to sponsor my parents in the UAE?

In Dubai the published minimum is AED 10,000 per month, shown by a salary certificate for government employees or an employment contract for private sector employees. Partners and investors submit the partnership agreement, trade licence and partners’ annex instead.

Can I sponsor just one parent?

Normally no. The Dubai residency authority states that a parent’s sponsorship should be for both, with exceptions only for death or divorce. If one of those applies, include the attested death certificate or divorce decree in the file.

Is there a deposit for a parents visa?

Yes. On approval a financial guarantee of AED 5,000 is required for each request, with the total guarantee not exceeding AED 15,000. It is a security held against the sponsorship rather than a fee.

How long does a parents visa take in Dubai?

The expected completion time published for the humanitarian cases route is 14 days, and every request is reviewed by a committee case by case. A spouse or child file on the ordinary family route is quoted at 48 hours, so do not plan around that timeline.

How long is the parents visa valid?

One year, renewable, regardless of how long your own residence permit runs. After expiry or cancellation there is a 60 day grace period to remain in the country.

What does a parents visa cost in Dubai?

The visa fee is AED 1,035 if the parent is already inside the country and AED 365 if the parent is still abroad. The residence permit itself is AED 200 plus AED 10 Knowledge Dirham, AED 10 Innovation Dirham, AED 500 in-country fee and AED 20 delivery. Overstaying after entry costs AED 25 per day.
