Entry Permit and Status Change UAE

An entry permit is an authorization issued by UAE immigration authorities that allows a person to enter the country for the purpose of completing residence visa processing. It is not the visa itself - it is the precursor that enables entry so the medical test, Emirates ID registration, and visa stamping can be completed.

A status change is the process of converting from one visa type to another while remaining inside the UAE. Status changes avoid the need to exit the country, but they are not available for all visa type combinations.

Step 1: Application by sponsor. The entry permit is applied for by your sponsor through GDRFA or the relevant free zone authority.

Step 2: Entry permit issuance. Once approved, the entry permit is issued electronically with a defined validity period.

Step 3: Enter the UAE. Use the entry permit to enter the country. Visa processing steps begin upon arrival.

Step 4: Complete visa processing. After entry, complete medical fitness test, Emirates ID registration, and visa stamping.

Step 1: Determine eligibility. Not all visa type combinations allow in-country status change. A visa consultant can assess whether your specific combination qualifies.

Step 2: Apply for status change. If eligible, the application is submitted through GDRFA.

Step 3: Approval and processing. If approved, proceed with the new visa process from inside the UAE.

When status change is NOT possible: Exit the UAE, obtain a new entry permit, and re-enter for visa processing. This is sometimes called a "visa run."
