An entry permit is the first step in most UAE visa processes - it authorizes you to enter the country for residence visa processing. If you are already in the UAE on another visa type, a status change may allow you to convert to a new visa without leaving.
Structured requests. Verified consultants. Competitive offers.
An entry permit is an authorization issued by UAE immigration authorities that allows a person to enter the country for the purpose of completing residence visa processing. A status change is the process of converting from one visa type to another while remaining inside the UAE.
An entry permit is an authorization issued by UAE immigration authorities that allows a person to enter the country for the purpose of completing residence visa processing. It is not the visa itself - it is the precursor that enables entry so the medical test, Emirates ID registration, and visa stamping can be completed.
A status change is the process of converting from one visa type to another while remaining inside the UAE. Status changes avoid the need to exit the country, but they are not available for all visa type combinations.
Step 1: Application by sponsor. The entry permit is applied for by your sponsor through GDRFA or the relevant free zone authority.
Step 2: Entry permit issuance. Once approved, the entry permit is issued electronically with a defined validity period.
Step 3: Enter the UAE. Use the entry permit to enter the country. Visa processing steps begin upon arrival.
Step 4: Complete visa processing. After entry, complete medical fitness test, Emirates ID registration, and visa stamping.
Step 1: Determine eligibility. Not all visa type combinations allow in-country status change. A visa consultant can assess whether your specific combination qualifies.
Step 2: Apply for status change. If eligible, the application is submitted through GDRFA.
Step 3: Approval and processing. If approved, proceed with the new visa process from inside the UAE.
When status change is NOT possible: Exit the UAE, obtain a new entry permit, and re-enter for visa processing. This is sometimes called a "visa run."
In-country status change eligibility is not universal. The most common misconception is that any visa can be converted to any other from inside the UAE. Always verify before planning.
Entry permit validity has a defined window. If you do not enter the UAE within that window, the permit expires and must be reissued.
Grace period between visas. If cancelling one visa and applying for another, there may be a grace period during the transition. Plan carefully to avoid gaps.
Visa runs are still common. Despite some in-country status changes being available, exiting and re-entering remains a common approach for combinations that do not qualify.
These verified visa consultants can help with entry permit applications, in-country status changes, and the coordination between visa cancellation and new visa processing.

In some cases yes - if the combination of your current visa type and target visa type qualifies for in-country status change under current regulations. Not all combinations are eligible.
Entry permits have a defined validity period - you must enter the UAE within that window. If the permit expires before you enter, it must be reissued.
This depends on the specific visa type and the current rules. Some conversions are possible in-country; others require exiting and re-entering.
A visa run is leaving the UAE and re-entering on a new entry permit - typically used when in-country status change is not available. It is a standard practice.
