Visa renewal applies to every residence visa holder approaching expiry:

  • Freelancers whose free zone visa is expiring

How Visa Renewal Works

Step 1: Start the process well before expiry. Begin with sufficient lead time before your visa expires.

Step 2: Updated medical fitness test. Complete a new medical fitness test at an approved health center.

Step 3: Emirates ID renewal. Your Emirates ID expiry is aligned with your visa. Renew the Emirates ID as part of the same process.

Step 4: Visa re-stamping. Once the medical and Emirates ID steps are complete, the renewed visa is stamped in your passport.

Timing, Consequences, and Practical Considerations

Start renewal early. The single most important piece of practical advice. Processing involves multiple sequential steps across different authorities, and delays at any point can push the completion date past your visa expiry.

Late renewal has financial consequences. If your visa expires before the renewal is completed, you enter a grace period after which daily fines begin to accumulate. The financial exposure from even a short overstay can be significant and is entirely avoidable.

Travelling during renewal. If you need to travel while your visa renewal is in progress, coordinate carefully with your PRO or processing agent.

Employer obligations for employee visas. Employers are responsible for initiating and completing visa renewals for their sponsored employees. Include visa renewal tracking in your HR and PRO operations calendar.

Dependent visa renewal follows the sponsor. When renewing your visa, plan for dependent renewals at the same time to keep the family's residency status aligned.
