Salary Transfer Letter UAE: Format and What Banks Ask For

A salary transfer letter is the employer undertaking a bank asks for before a loan or credit card. What it says is set out here, with an editable sample.

Quick answer

A UAE salary transfer letter is signed and stamped by the employer’s authorised signatory and addressed to the bank. It states your name, passport number, job title, joining date and monthly salary, confirms that your salary will be credited to a named account, undertakes not to move the salary to another bank without that bank’s clearance letter, and promises to notify the bank and transfer your end-of-service benefits if your employment ends. Most banks give you their own form to take to HR; an editable sample is attached on this page.

A salary transfer letter is a letter from your employer to a bank. It confirms your job and your salary, and it records the employer’s undertaking to pay your salary into your account at that bank and to send your end-of-service benefits there when you leave. UAE banks ask for it mainly with personal loans. Below is what the letter says, which banks require their own form, and an editable sample for banks that accept a letter on company letterhead.

When banks ask for a salary transfer letter

It is a bank requirement tied to a product, most often a personal loan. What the banks’ own pages and terms said when we checked:

Bank What it asks for
Emirates NBD For its salary transfer loan the salary must move to the bank, with the latest salary certificate or a salary transfer letter. For a salary transfer account, a salary transfer letter is one of the accepted documents, issued not more than 30 days earlier for non-government employers. It publishes its own format.
ADCB For a personal loan, salary and end-of-service benefits must be transferred to ADCB, and the employer signs a Salary Assignment Letter. The same applies to a salary overdraft.
Mashreq A salary transfer loan requires a salary transfer letter from the employer in the format the bank requires. Mashreq also offers loans without salary transfer.
First Abu Dhabi Bank For personal loans, a salary transfer letter or a salary certificate addressed to FAB.
Emirates Islamic For personal finance, a salary transfer letter in its own format, including a new one when you change employer. For a credit card or auto finance, a salary certificate.
Dubai Islamic Bank Its personal finance page lists a salary and end-of-service benefit transfer letter or certificate from the employer, and states that salary transfer to the bank is not mandatory.

What a salary transfer letter says

The formats Emirates NBD and Emirates Islamic publish share the same core:

  • it is addressed to the bank and names the employee, the passport number, the job title and the date of joining;
  • it states the monthly salary, gross or inclusive of all allowances, and on the Emirates NBD form also the accrued gratuity;
  • it confirms that the salary will be credited to a named account at the bank from a stated month;
  • the employer undertakes not to transfer the salary to another bank until the bank issues a clearance letter;
  • if the employment ends, the employer will inform the bank and transfer the gratuity and final settlement to the same account;
  • it says the letter is issued at the employee’s request and is not a guarantee by the employer;
  • it is signed by an authorised signatory, with name and title, and carries the company stamp.

Salary transfer letter format (sample)

Use the bank’s own form if it has one. Where the bank accepts a letter on company letterhead, this layout covers the usual points:

Subject: Salary transfer letter for [Employee Full Name]

This is to confirm that [Employee Full Name], a [Nationality] national, holder of passport number [Passport No.] and Emirates ID [Emirates ID No.], has been employed with [Company Name] as [Job Title] since [Joining Date], with a gross monthly salary of AED [amount], inclusive of all allowances. This letter is issued at the request of the employee and does not constitute a guarantee or any financial obligation on our part.

Changing jobs with a loan

  • Tell the bank before you move. ADCB’s terms require notice in advance, and a letter from the new employer acceptable to the bank.
  • Expect to bring a new salary transfer letter from the new employer. Emirates NBD asks for one in its own format, and says your first salary must reach the bank if you want to keep your existing loan rate. Emirates Islamic says your new salary must continue to be transferred to it while you have personal finance.
  • End-of-service benefits usually land in the salary transfer account. Emirates NBD blocks the outstanding loan amount from them, and Mashreq’s terms require all end-of-service amounts to be transferred to the bank.
  • To move your salary to another bank, you need a clearance letter first. Emirates Islamic allows the move once your liabilities are settled.

What the Central Bank rules add

Salary transfer is a condition each bank sets for its own products: we found no Central Bank rule that requires it. The Central Bank’s rules on loans to individuals do set the frame around it:

  • banks must properly ascertain a borrower’s salary and end-of-service benefits from the employer (Notice 2901/2011 under Regulation 29/2011);
  • a personal loan is capped at 20 times the monthly salary or total income, with a repayment period of up to 48 months, and total deductions cannot exceed 50% of gross salary;
  • you can move a loan to another bank for an early settlement fee of at most 1% of the outstanding balance or AED 10,000, whichever is less;
  • banks must issue clearance and liability certificates within 7 working days of your request, with a fine of AED 10,000 for each violation;
  • a bank must not block more than the actual amount you owe, and must not block your end-of-service payment to repay a mortgage.

Frequently asked questions

What is a salary transfer letter?

A letter from your employer to a bank confirming your job and salary, in which the employer undertakes to pay your salary into your account at that bank and not to move it elsewhere without the bank’s clearance letter. Banks ask for it mainly with personal loans.

Who signs a salary transfer letter?

The employer’s authorised signatory, with name and title, and the company stamp. The employee cannot issue it.

Do I need a salary transfer letter for a credit card?

Not always. Personal loans usually require it, while for credit cards and some accounts several banks accept a salary certificate instead. Emirates Islamic, for example, asks for a salary certificate for a credit card or auto finance.

How long is a salary transfer letter valid?

Each bank sets its own rule. Emirates NBD, for example, accepts a salary transfer letter for a salary transfer account only if it was issued not more than 30 days earlier by a non-government employer.

What happens when I change jobs?

Tell the bank first and bring a new salary transfer letter from the new employer, usually on the bank’s form. To move your salary to another bank you need a clearance letter, and banks must issue clearance and liability certificates within 7 working days of your request.

Is a salary transfer letter a guarantee by my employer?

No. The formats published by Emirates NBD and Emirates Islamic state that the letter does not constitute a guarantee or financial obligation on the employer’s part.
